THE MERMAID WASHED ASHORE
PART ONE: THE WATCHERS (FROM AFAR)
There she stood on the rocks, first human sighting, I can take it no more
The rocks can take no more either, the fury of the waves
In green, motionless yet leaving all in disarray (the scribe too)
A fleeting glance, the gentle sway of her hips, flawless
Aphrodite, in all her vanity and glory, turns to green (as well)
How could such beauty be so calm yet cause fear and dismay
All in the euphoria of the mermaid washed ashore…
Her longing for adventure has led her here, captured in a moment
Woman of mystery, has your journey ended here on these barren rocks
Or is it only to remind us that there is a greater power, to be with us if only for a while
Stay with us, mere mortals, for a little while longer
How could one wield such authority and still shy away, yet leaving us with so little to say
All in the euphoria of the mermaid washed ashore…
Our fortune have changed, the Gods have smiled on us
Lady luck, so it seems, has finally turned to our aid
Xena-like, she brings with her, a genteel yet warlike spirit, like a two edged sword
One to nurture in the new, and the other to destroy all that is of the past
Helen of Troy, this is your Waterloo, and this is no sane thing
The Wheel of Dharma has spun its course yet again, and this is the beginning…
All in the euphoria of the mermaid washed ashore…
PART TWO: THE SCRIBE
This is my story and the song that I’ve kept close to my heart
And at my side (written in my memoirs)
I know your darkest dreams and deepest fears
Your thoughts and feelings are mine to interpret
On this journey of ours, chasing the wind leading to nowhere
And yet another journey is complete, but we still go on forever looking for a destination, our destiny
Not truly knowing what it is
(Yet it seems farther from the truth)
The eyes have it, the lust to roam and conquer the world (with love)
Moving effortlessly, from this world into the next
In strange or familiar lands, yet lending to all a helping hand
Heard the cry of battle so many times before, and I’ve had to pinch myself from this reverie
Fear, your only true ally, Anger, your only true friend
What part do I have to play, but of a humble scribe
Some call you a mermaid; some call you the ‘siren of all sirens’, but to many you are on a pedestal
To me, human, born with the same pains and joy, and that is the truth
(Yet it seems farther from the truth…)
You are no stranger to unbridled desire, for you are a woman
I have seen it in your eyes; those heavenly limbs have given way to earthly aphrodisia
Falling prey to sweet little nothings, futile words they may be, but they fill you up
Your mind, body and soul have single purpose, to embrace womanhood
The grass covers your nakedness, swaying to the tune of two ‘throbbing’ heartbeats
Bearing witness to the erotica, skin on skin, who is this mortal, that graces the contours of a goddess
Turning away, if only for a moment, to hear the moans of a woman in love, in sweet union
In resonance to the breeze, wistful goading, two become one, yet springtime is still far away
For me, you are only human, born with the same pain and joy, and that is the truth
(Yet it seems farther from the truth…)
Why do you search for this is ethereal, intangible and that which is unattainable?
The unforgettable fire that burns within, do not quench its thirst
I have watched you, wash it in the Styx, the river of forgetfulness
Watched you fight it on the highest mountaintop
(The curse of the Arian deity)
Seen it submerged, in the depths of the deepest oceans
Yet it always remains… ever-present, for it is a part of you
For it is you, it is what has made you, and it will remain
To me, you are still human, born with the same pain and joy, and that is the truth
(Yet it seems farther from the truth…)
What is to come, where we will go from is only for the gods to know
My time here on this earth is well-spent, in the presence of a half-woman & half-god
As our paths lead on in one direction, I choose no other way
To spend my time under the Sun, in this life or the next
For to me, you are still human, born with the same pain and joy, this is no lie
(Yet it seems farther from the truth…)
