Lyrics in the truer sense of the word, flawless guitar shredding, percussion with odd time signatures, soaring vocals and songs that almost last half an hour. This is progressive rock. Not for the weak of heart. It’s of the intense, well constructed variety that you don’t get much of these days.

I will never forget the first time I heard ‘Pull me under’ by Dream Theater in college, a band that has been progressive rock circuit for a while now. For almost three decades now. That’s a long time. It’s like one big family.

Mike Portnoy, John Petrucci, John Myung, James LaBrie and Jordan Rudess – the current lineup of Dream Theater has come a long way.

The first three are the original members of the band, and started playing from a very young age, decided to graduate from Berkelee in music, and start playing progressive rock.

It didn’t just happen overnight. They had to change one vocalist and auditioned a million more until they came across a demo tape of James Labrie, their current frontman. And the rest was history.

They’ve created some great music. Personally, I can’t decided which album is better. No two are the same, although the artistry is evident in all of them.
