May 20th, 2009 • Category: Health and Beauty |Ask a woman how childbirth is like and she had probably liken it to a process in which a melon is squeezed out from a pinhole. In reality, childbirth can be a traumatic experience, women than previously assumed.
According to some researchers, about as many as one out 20 women who have given birth suffer from a form of childbirth trauma, characterized by panic attacks at night, flashbacks, recurrent dreams of childbirth, and anxiety.
Other symptoms include problems with breastfeeding and avoidance of sex.The more extreme cases may include a strong anxiety and fear of death during childbirth. The consequences of these symptoms are grave–there are even marriage breakups because of a perceived change in the woman’s personality by the spouse as well as suicide, purportedly one of the largest causes of maternal death today.
CAUSES OF CHILDBIRTH TRAUMA
Childbirth trauma can result due to many reasons. These includes poor pain relief, feelings of loss of control, a lack of privacy and dignity, poor postnatal care, and impersonal treatment by hospital staff. But in most cases , childbirth trauma results from traumatic bodily treatment or emergency deliveries. Some doctors believe in a link between childbirth trauma and the advent of technology, resulting in unnecessary stress on women in childbirth, thus adding to the childbirth trauma. They say that since it is common for doctors to intervene during childbirth, this could possibly result in a more traumatic experience to women, whether it is a cervix that is slow to dilate, a less-than-perfect position of a baby, etc.
Therefore, The overall birthing experience is important. More than required intervention could cause more problems but little intervention could also cause more deaths. Therefore, the key to helping reduce childbirth trauma is the middle path–finding that balance.
