Know your body—the nose!

The Nose:
• Identifying smells is your brain’s way of telling you about your environment
• An odor can stimulate several different kinds of receptors. The brain interprets the combination of receptors to recognize any one of about 10,000 different smells.
• Your nose is more than a passageway for air. The nose also warms, moistens, and filters the air before it goes to the lungs.
• You sense of smell also can help you keep safe. For example, it can warn you not to eat something that smells rotten or help you detect smoke before you see a fire.
• If something is trapped in your nose, you will automatically sneeze, which will send the unwelcome particles blasting out of your nose at 100mph!
• Most people think of the tongue when they think about taste. However, you could not taste anything without some help from the nose! The ability to smell and taste go together because odors from foods allow us to taste more fully.
• People can distinguish from 3,000 to 10,000 different odors. Some odors, such as the smell of green bell pepper can be detected when it is mixed with air at only 0.5 parts per trillion!
• A disorder where you have no sense of smell is called ‘anosmia’, which can be caused by serious head injury or brain damage due to tumor or surgery.
• Elderly people have a reduced sense of smell.
• Natural gas, which many people use to heat their homes and to cook, is odorless. Because natural gas is dangerous to breathe and is explosive, it is important for a people to detect a gas leak. That is why gas companies add a smelly chemical called mercaptan to natural gas.
