A path less travelled – Sabyasachi Mukherjee !
One of the Top fashion designers of India – A relative newcomer to the Indian fashion designing scene, Sabyasachi burst into the fashion scene when he graduated from NIFT in 1999 winning three major awards. His belief that ‘clothes should just be an extension of one’s intellect’ has been reflected ever since in every one of his unique creations, and even today it is easy to recognise his distinctive style from the multitude seen on the fashion ramp.
Deserts, gypsies, prostitutes, antique textiles from his hometown Kolkata, he has drawn inspiration from all of them. He has drawn modern silhouettes using ancient methods such as gota-work, bandhani, block printing and tie and dyeing. His styling and designing is unique in its use of unusual fabrics and techniques to produce a vibrant fusion outfit, which can be worn comfortably both in India and abroad.
He takes pride in the fact that he is first and foremost a businessman, and that the preservation of his artisan’s livelihood is of tremendous importance to him. He designs for those people who revere textiles and are proud to wear their traditional style with aplomb and flair. He is not seeking the path of stylists who cater to the rich and mighty, rather a woman ‘who does not need Sabyasachi the brand, but understands Sabyasachi the product’. This fashion designer has designed for Hindi films, and his outfits for Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s ‘Black’ won him the National Award in 2005. Truly a great fashion designer of India.
