Tradition and Ethnic Designs are Ritu Kumar’s Hallmarks.

Fashion designer Ritu Kumar has for over half a century been the visible face of ethnic Indian designer wear. She has taken the finest Indian craftsmanship and patterns and woven them into her own inimitable style, to give us a look that is completely Indian, yet embodying within it the latest cuts and style. The fact that almost all Miss India’s have represented their country at international pageants wearing her creations is an immeasurable tribute to her genius.

Whether it is her western wear label ‘Label’ or her traditional Indian wear ‘Ritu Kumar’, she has shown us how the divide between contemporary and tradition can be conquered with a fusion of ancient patterns and modern styling. She was the first woman to bring in the boutique culture, and today over half a century later, it is clear that she has managed to keep in sync with the trends of each century without losing sight of her emphasis on vintage Indian textiles and themes.

Fashion designer Ritu Kumar has led a revival of Indian textiles by showcasing them all over the world. She has used innovative techniques on ancient prints and crafts; she has produced gowns with traditional Indian embroideries and she has given us casual wear with Indian block prints. Despite the fact that many have attempted to replicate her unique designs, she remains the undisputed queen of India’s fashion designing sector.

One of the Top fashion designers of India – A relative newcomer to the Indian fashion designing scene, Sabyasachi burst into the fashion scene when he graduated from NIFT in 1999 winning three major awards. His belief that ‘clothes should just be an extension of one’s intellect’ has been reflected ever since in every one of his unique creations, and even today it is easy to recognise his distinctive style from the multitude seen on the fashion ramp.

Deserts, gypsies, prostitutes, antique textiles from his hometown Kolkata, he has drawn inspiration from all of them. He has drawn modern silhouettes using ancient methods such as gota-work, bandhani, block printing and tie and dyeing. His styling and designing is unique in its use of unusual fabrics and techniques to produce a vibrant fusion outfit, which can be worn comfortably both in India and abroad.

He takes pride in the fact that he is first and foremost a businessman, and that the preservation of his artisan’s livelihood is of tremendous importance to him. He designs for those people who revere textiles and are proud to wear their traditional style with aplomb and flair. He is not seeking the path of stylists who cater to the rich and mighty, rather a woman ‘who does not need Sabyasachi the brand, but understands Sabyasachi the product’. This fashion designer has designed for Hindi films, and his outfits for Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s ‘Black’ won him the National Award in 2005. Truly a great fashion designer of India.
